COP17 concludes in Mongolia amid challenges in global environmental integration

The 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP17) concluded in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Held under the theme ‘Restore Land, Restore Hope’, the summit focused on addressing land degradation, drought, and ecosystem restoration.

Despite the urgency of overlapping climate, biodiversity, and land preservation crises, the conference ended without a full consensus on global environmental integration, a situation attributed to political difficulties among developed nations. However, representatives from Brazil emphasized the strategic importance of maintaining existing agreements and preventing environmental setbacks.

During the proceedings, the Guinean delegation highlighted the need to balance economic development with natural resource preservation, specifically referencing the Simandou 2040 program. Guinea also raised concerns regarding the environmental impact of illegal gold mining on soil and water resources.
