Emine Erdoğan promotes Zero Waste movement at New York Climate Week

Emine Erdoğan, Chair of the UN High-Level Advisory Board of Eminent Persons on Zero Waste, participated in New York Climate Week to advocate for the Zero Waste movement. During her address, she emphasized that the movement empowers individuals to become active participants in addressing the climate crisis rather than mere observers. She highlighted the environmental cost of current consumption patterns, noting that approximately 7 billion tons of the 9.2 billion tons of plastic produced since the 1950s has become waste.

In addition to her keynote, Erdoğan engaged in climate diplomacy at the Turkevi in New York. She held meetings with Rosangela Lula da Silva, wife of the Brazilian President, to discuss environmental challenges and preparations for COP31. She also met with Fatima Maada Bio, wife of the President of Sierra Leone, to discuss cooperation on sustainability, education, and social welfare.

Ahead of the COP31 summit to be hosted by Turkey in Antalya, Samed Ağırbaş, Chairman of the Zero Waste Foundation, stated that zero waste is evolving from a waste management technique into a central pillar of global climate policy. The upcoming summit is expected to focus heavily on circular economy practices, food waste prevention, and the reduction of methane emissions from waste.
