Copacabana man beaten to death after false bicycle theft accusation

Cláudio Rafael Landeiro, a 37-year-old man, was beaten to death in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, after being falsely accused of stealing a bicycle. The bicycle actually belonged to his sister, whom he was riding for.

Security footage captured a nine-minute assault involving punches, kicks, and strikes with a wooden club. Authorities have arrested four men: two security guards, Davi Santos Machado and Jorge Luiz Ricardo Dias, and two delivery workers, Felipe Eduardo dos Santos Silva and Ailton José da Silva. A fifth suspect, Wellington Luiz Santos de Souza, has been identified and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

The incident has sparked intense debate regarding vigilantism and the role of unregulated private security groups in Rio de Janeiro. The National Council of Human Rights has requested information from the State Secretariat of Public Security regarding the investigation. Landeiro died from severe head trauma and internal injuries at Miguel Couto Hospital.
