Coparmex demands action against rising extortion in Chihuahua
The business organization Coparmex in Nuevo Casas Grandes has called on all levels of government to strengthen strategies to combat extortion and telephone fraud in Chihuahua.
According to data from the Secretariado Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública (SESNSP), Chihuahua recorded the highest percentage increase in extortion victims in the country, rising from 4 to 97 victims in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. This represents a 2,325 percent increase.
Local representatives warned of a rise in 'virtual kidnapping' schemes, where criminals target adolescents and young people to isolate them before pressuring families for money. Coparmex noted that these crimes hinder commercial growth, paralyze investment, and threaten regional security.
