Copasa undergoes privatization in Minas Gerais amid regional water issues

In Minas Gerais, the water utility Copasa is undergoing significant structural changes following its privatization by the state government. The Equatorial Energia Group has acquired a 30% stake, while the government's share was reduced from 50.03% to 5.03%. The operation raised approximately R$ 8.3 billion to settle state debts with the Union, with new concessions extending to 2073.

Despite these changes, regional water issues persist. In Divinópolis, Copasa has warned of potential water supply interruptions in 39 neighborhoods due to scheduled operational maintenance. Residents are advised to use stored water conscientiously as service is expected to normalize gradually throughout the night following the works.

Additionally, in Araxá, Australian firm St George Mining has announced a R$ 2 billion investment in a niobium and rare earths mining project. However, reports indicate the company signed a protocol of intentions to process the ore in Uberlândia, a move made without the prior knowledge of Araxá's local authorities or community.
