Chile faces historic frontal storm with deadly floods and widespread alerts

An intense frontal system has swept Chile, delivering record rainfall—over 200 mm in several localities such as Punitaqui, El Peral and Salamanca—and bringing strong winds, snow and mudslides. The storm has left at least four people dead, more than 2 500 isolated, and caused power outages for around 400 000 homes, especially in the Valparaíso, Coquimbo and Metropolitan regions.

Emergency alerts have been issued across the country: red alerts for Cauquenes and Parral, yellow alerts for Los Ángeles and multiple red zones for river over‑flows, while the National Emergency Service (SENAPRED) continues to monitor creeks and rivers. Heavy rains have activated quebradas, flooded roads, and triggered evacuations in towns such as Monte Patria, where a family was rescued by Carabineros and GOPE units.

The agricultural sector faces risk of crop loss due to waterlogged fields, prompting a government damage assessment. President José Antonio Kast visited the Maule region, inspecting relief operations and meeting with local officials. Authorities are urging residents to avoid flooded areas, secure roofs, and follow official guidance as another frontal system is forecast to arrive later this week.
