Copenhagen accelerates urban development and local planning

Copenhagen Municipality is implementing measures to accelerate urban development and housing construction. The Climate, Environment, and Technical Committee has approved a plan to reduce political processing time for smaller local plans. By allowing the administration to finalize Category 1 and 2 local plans—unless they involve major projects or significant public feedback—the city aims to reduce average processing times by approximately 11 weeks.

As part of these development efforts, plans for a new 100-meter, 32-story residential high-rise near Copenhagen South Station have been sent for an eight-week public hearing. The building is intended to serve as a landmark for the station and will be among the tallest residential structures in the city. The surrounding area is being designed as a new district that prioritizes cycling over car traffic, centered around the metro and S-train hub.

Additionally, the municipality is conducting a pilot program where developers draft local plan proposals to increase efficiency. The goal is to address the shortage of affordable housing for workers and students in the city.
