Copenhagen court sentences man to one year for fatal assault of Swedish officer

The Copenhagen District Court has sentenced 31-year-old Nkumba Ludovic Tshiembe to one year in prison and a one-year ban from nightlife venues following the death of Swedish police officer Christian Zedig. The incident occurred on June 30 at Islands Brygge during a World Cup event, where Tshiembe delivered a fatal punch to Zedig's neck while the officer was attempting to intervene in a fight.

Because the charge was classified as simple violence rather than murder, the sentence has sparked intense political backlash in Denmark. Justice Minister Nicolai Wammen and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed outrage, with Wammen stating he was “hard to find words for how angry I am” regarding the outcome. Politicians are now calling for legislative changes to ensure that fatal assaults by repeat offenders result in significantly harsher penalties.

Tshiembe, a Danish citizen originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has a criminal history that includes attempted murder and rape. He pleaded guilty to the charge and indicated he would not appeal the sentence. The victim's family is seeking approximately 1.9 million Danish kroner in damages.
