Copenhagen electric grid faces billion-kroner investment pressure
A report by Siemens for EIT Urban Mobility indicates that Copenhagen’s electrical infrastructure faces significant pressure. Without changes in consumer behavior, an investment of 3.9 billion kroner will be required by 2030 to accommodate the increasing load from electric vehicles.
By 2030, there are projected to be approximately 1.5 million electric passenger cars on Danish roads. However, the report suggests that implementing intelligent charging management could reduce the necessary investment to 2.4 billion kroner, resulting in a saving of 1.5 billion kroner for the capital alone.
To manage these costs, grid operators such as Radius, Cerius, and N1 are increasing time-differentiated network tariffs. This makes charging during peak hours, specifically between 17:00 and 21:00 during winter, significantly more expensive. Experts suggest that using intelligent charging boxes that monitor electricity prices and local tariffs can help drivers avoid high costs and grid overloads.
