Copenhagen man charged in death of Swedish police officer
A 31-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of Christian Zedig, a 32-year-old Swedish police officer, in Copenhagen. The incident occurred at Islands Brygge during a public viewing of a football match between Norway and Ivory Coast.
According to the indictment, the suspect struck Zedig on the left side of his head or neck, causing a ruptured artery. Zedig succumbed to his injuries on July 3. The suspect also faces charges for assault involving throwing beer cans at a group of people. While the suspect denies the charges, Copenhagen police noted that the current assault charge carries a potential sentence of eight to ten months under Danish practice.
The suspect, who has a prior criminal record including convictions for rape and attempted murder, is also scheduled to appear in court for a separate incident involving a violent prison fight in September 2022. The case regarding Zedig is set to be heard in the Copenhagen District Court on October 7.
