Copenhagen named top European city for quality of life in 2026

The Monocle Quality of Life Survey 2026 ranked Copenhagen as the best European city to live in. The assessment considered factors such as safety, public spaces, local commerce, transport connectivity, green areas, gastronomy and overall livability, alongside housing affordability, climate initiatives and reduced car traffic. Lisbon and Vienna completed the top three, with Lisbon praised for its climate, culinary scene and airport links, but facing high housing costs, while Vienna was noted for its cultural life and housing programmes. Copenhagen has held a leading position in the ranking for several years, highlighted for its cycling culture, clean air, public transport and waterfront amenities.

The survey, conducted by the British magazine Monocle and reported by Euronews, evaluated 75 of the world’s best cities, of which 13 were European, emphasizing a holistic view of urban quality beyond economic metrics.
