Copenhagen to fund senior high school stays to combat elderly loneliness

Copenhagen Municipality has announced a new initiative to combat loneliness among elderly residents by funding stays at senior folk high schools. Starting in 2027, the municipality will allocate 2 million DKK annually to send approximately 250 seniors with limited social networks on four-to-six-day stays at existing senior high schools across Denmark.

The program includes instruction, lectures, excursions, and cultural activities, covering both lodging and meals. To support the initiative, an additional 700,000 DKK per year will be dedicated to day trips and one-day programs within Copenhagen and its surrounding areas for those unable to commit to multi-day stays.

Health and Care Mayor Jens-Kristian Lütken noted that loneliness among the elderly is a major societal challenge affecting both physical and mental health. The municipality plans to collaborate with civil society organizations to help participants maintain new social connections after returning home. Recruitment will be facilitated through home care services, visitation, prevention consultants, activity centers, and senior clubs.
