Copenhagen trial set for man accused of killing Swedish police officer

A 31-year-old man faces trial in Copenhagen for the fatal assault of Swedish police officer Christian Zedig. The incident occurred on June 30 at Islands Brygge during a World Cup event, where Zedig was reportedly attempting to intervene in a dispute.

According to the indictment, the suspect delivered a heavy punch to the victim's head and neck, causing a ruptured artery. The victim died in the hospital three days later. The suspect is also accused of throwing beer cans at a group of people during the altercation.

The prosecutor is seeking a prison sentence and a specific nightlife ban. This legal measure, known in Denmark as an “opholdsforbud i nattelivet,” would prohibit the individual from entering bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and other establishments serving alcohol with an ABV of 2.8% or higher between midnight and 5:00 AM. The ban could apply to designated nightlife zones across Denmark for up to two years.
