Copernicus satellite service activated for Greek wildfire mapping

The Copernicus Emergency Management Service has been activated to provide satellite mapping and data to support emergency response efforts in Greece following significant wildfires. The Greek General Secretariat for Civil Protection requested specialized satellite data from the European Union to assist in managing the impact of the fires.

In the Sivri area of Kassandra, Chalkidiki, satellite imagery from August 14, 2026, indicates that the fire burned approximately 248 hectares (2,480 stremmata). The mapping service provides free cartographic products to all involved agencies to aid firefighting, emergency management, and damage assessment.

Additionally, the service has been deployed to support operations on the island of Skyros, where authorities are utilizing the data to manage a major forest fire and evaluate its consequences.
