Lega Serie A considers Coppa Italia format changes

Lega Serie A is considering a significant restructuring of the Coppa Italia format starting from the 2027/28 season. The goal is to make the competition more engaging for viewers and more lucrative for upcoming television rights auctions, as the current 58 million euro annual agreement with Mediaset expires at the end of the 2026/27 season.

Three potential formats are under evaluation: a continuation of the current 44-team structure (20 Serie A, 20 Serie B, and 4 Serie C clubs); an expanded 56-team version including 16 Serie C clubs; or a large-scale 72-team format featuring 32 Lega Pro clubs.

Additionally, officials are discussing the potential return of a group stage, a format that has not been utilized since the 2004/05 season. While expanding the tournament to include more smaller clubs, organizers aim to avoid overcomplicating the match calendar.
