Copper and gold markets see price surges and rising demand forecasts
Gold and copper markets have shown significant recent activity. On August 20, gold prices reached 4,525.79 USD per fine ounce, marking a two-month high, supported by a weaker US dollar and lower US yields.
Copper prices on the LME cash market also experienced a surge, briefly exceeding 14,900 USD per tonne due to technical supply and position shortages. Looking ahead, S&P Global forecasts that global copper demand will increase from 28 million tonnes in 2025 to approximately 42 million tonnes by 2040. This growth, driven by electrification, renewable energy, AI data centers, and defense sectors, could result in a supply gap of 10 million tonnes if mining production and recycling do not expand sufficiently.
