Copper funds and miners rise amid Latin American market volatility
Copper-linked funds and major miners showed resilience on Monday, October 26, 2026, as Latin American markets experienced significant volatility. While Brazil’s Ibovespa index fell 13.88% following President Lula’s re-election, copper-related assets acted as a regional haven.
Key performers included the CPER copper-futures fund, which rose 0.84% to US$39.39, and the COPX global copper miners fund, which gained 0.99% to US$73.81. Southern Copper, with operations in Peru and Mexico, rose 0.54% to US$186.01. In contrast, US-based Freeport-McMoRan remained largely flat, ending at US$65.16.
Market analysts suggest copper miners remained stable because their revenues are priced in US dollars, insulating them from the Brazil-specific shock. However, observers are monitoring whether the sell-off spreads to Chile and Peru, where copper is a vital economic component.
On the technical side, copper is trading near $6.45/lb. While recent price action has been volatile and range-bound, some market analysis suggests the current decline may be approaching a potential bottom near the $6.30 area, which could lead to a rebound toward $6.70 or $6.90, provided structural demand from AI infrastructure and electrification remains strong.
