Copper mining developments involve Cobre and Anglo American merger

Cobre is advancing toward a 62.86% controlling interest in the Sierra Atacama Copper Project in Chile. The company plans to exercise a US$12 million option to convert preference shares, which would grant its subsidiary, Sierra Cobre, majority ownership in both Sierra Atacama and Bergbau Wagen. Executive Chairman Martin Holland stated that increased ownership would provide greater exposure to production growth and cash-flow upside as the project ramps up copper cathode production through 2027.

In a separate major industry development, Glencore has become a pivotal figure in the proposed $50 billion merger between Anglo American and Teck Resources. The merger, which would create a top-five global copper producer named Anglo Teck, seeks to integrate Teck’s Quebrada Blanca operation with the Collahuasi mine in Chile. This integration is estimated to potentially add $1.4 billion in annual earnings. However, because Glencore holds a 44% interest in Collahuasi, its cooperation is essential for the realization of these operational synergies.
