Copper prices approach records amid US tariff uncertainty

Copper prices are surging toward record levels on the London Metal Exchange (LME), driven largely by market anticipation of potential US trade tariffs. While global copper stocks remain high, a significant price premium for immediate delivery has emerged because US buyers are aggressively stockpiling refined copper to hedge against proposed tariffs. The US Department of Commerce previously suggested tariffs of 15 percent on refined copper starting in 2027, rising to 30 percent in 2028, though a final decision from the Trump administration is still pending.

On Monday, copper prices reached 14,396 dollars per ton, nearing the historical record of 14,527.50 dollars. The three-month term on the LME has risen by more than 1,000 dollars per ton since late July. This price action is further complicated by supply-side disruptions, including a harsh winter in Chile's Atacama region affecting Lundin Mining, and projections from Cochilco that Chilean copper production could fall 2.6 percent year-on-year to 5.3 million tons in 2026.

Analysts suggest that while short-term volatility remains a risk once tariff decisions are finalized, long-term demand for copper is supported by global electrification trends and the expansion of data centers.
