Coquimbo, Chile ramps up flu vaccinations and medical aid after storm
After an intense frontal system struck Chile's Coquimbo region and neighboring Atacama, health authorities launched a coordinated response. Seremi de Salud Karen Ibarra urged residents to get the influenza vaccine to lower the risk of intensive‑care admission or death, and also recommended hepatitis A vaccination for people under 50. The campaign reported high coverage in several communes, with Canela reaching about 89% and the province of Chiloé achieving 76% (69,665 people) as of early August, though still slightly below national (78.5%) and regional (78.4%) averages.
The Ministry of Health, together with the Ministry of Defense, deployed the Chilean Army to install a Specialized Medical Care Post (PAME) in Alto del Carmen, Atacama. The facility operates six units for patient care, vaccination, pharmacy services and clinical support, reinforcing the local health centre that was impacted by the storm. Defense Minister Fernando Barros noted that more than a thousand troops are active in the region.
Epidemiologists warned that the aftermath could see a rise in respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses due to water contamination, indoor crowding and cold, damp conditions. Dr. Cristian Rodríguez emphasized hand‑washing, proper food handling and prompt immunisation as key preventive measures.
