Coquimbo mining sector launches initiative to boost professional internships

The Seremi de Minería in the Coquimbo Region is spearheading a public-private initiative to expand professional internship opportunities and strengthen the employability of local students. By connecting the public sector, the mining industry, and educational institutions, the program aims to align regional talent with the specific needs of the mining sector.

This effort addresses a critical generational shift within the industry. Data from the 2025-2034 Large-Scale Mining Workforce Study indicates that workers under 29 years old represent only 8% of the sector, while those over 55 account for 17%. To meet future demands, the industry is projected to require 37,000 new workers by 2034.

To facilitate this transition, universities and technical training centers are implementing immersive learning tools, such as experimental tunnels and virtual mine tours, to engage younger generations and bridge the gap between academic training and industrial requirements.
