Coquimbo protected areas reopen after July storms

Authorities in Chile's Coquimbo Region have announced the reopening of four protected wilderness areas managed by CONAF. The sites had been closed preventively following heavy rainfall and storm damage in July.

The reopening follows a coordinated recovery effort involving CONAF, SUBDERE, SERNATUR, and the municipalities of Ovalle, Río Hurtado, La Higuera, and Illapel. Key destinations, including the Fray Jorge National Park, are now accessible to the public.

Officials noted that the reopening ahead of the Fiestas Patrias celebrations is expected to boost local economies by supporting tourism, hospitality, gastronomy, and astrotourism. CONAF has advised visitors to follow all safety signage and park ranger instructions to protect the region's natural heritage.
