Coquimbo Region weather aftermath reveals historic bridge and prompts resilient reconstruction

Recent heavy rainfall and weather systems in Chile's Coquimbo Region have resulted in several notable findings and recovery efforts following intense storms and landslides.

In the Arrayán Costero sector of La Serena, erosion and earth movement revealed a historic stone bridge dating back to 1926. The structure, which was previously hidden by dense vegetation, features hand-cut stones and masonry that withstood recent flash floods. The discovery also included a stone arch vault forming a small tunnel.

In Illapel, local authorities are addressing the aftermath of a landslide where a massive rock crashed through a resident's kitchen. The Mayor of Illapel, Denis Cortés, announced that instead of discarding the stone, the municipality and the homeowner have agreed to recycle the block into a wall during the home's reconstruction as a symbol of resilience.
