Coraasan invests RD$15 billion in Santiago water infrastructure

The Santiago Aqueduct and Sewerage Corporation (Coraasan) has announced a hydraulic works program exceeding RD$15 billion to strengthen potable water supply and sanitation in the Santiago province of the Dominican Republic. Key initiatives include the rehabilitation of the Pastor aqueduct, the construction of the San Francisco de Jacagua aqueduct, and the expansion of the La Barranquita aqueduct. Additionally, the corporation plans to build nine storage tanks to improve distribution and capacity.

While infrastructure expansion is underway, former Coraasan director Silvio Durán has warned that a lack of individual water meters contributes to a significant deficit. Durán stated that approximately 70% of water production in Santiago is “unaccounted water” due to a lack of consumption control. He noted that a 30-year strategic plan developed with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) previously included financing for 250,000 micrometers to promote responsible usage and fiscal oversight.
