Coral reefs lose recovery window as bleaching events accelerate
Scientists warn that coral reefs worldwide are no longer able to recover between severe bleaching events. Where reefs once had roughly a decade to rebuild, the interval has collapsed to just a few years in many regions, creating a cumulative crisis rather than isolated incidents.
Marine ecologists Mollie Asbury and Tye Kindinger of the conservation group Pristine Seas say resilience is linked to measurable factors such as structural complexity and prior exposure to warm temperatures. Mapping these traits can help prioritize protection for reefs with the highest odds of recovery, especially remote reefs that have experienced little human disturbance.
The accelerating loss of recovery time threatens food security, fisheries and coastal protection across the Pacific and other ocean basins.
