Coral Reefs Threatened by Sunscreen Pollution
Each year an estimated 10‑14 thousand tonnes of sunscreen wash into oceans, reaching coral reefs worldwide. Chemical UV filters such as oxybenzone and octinoxate can disrupt coral development, cause bleaching, and impair larval growth; oxybenzone also acts as an endocrine disruptor.
Standard wastewater treatment does not fully remove these compounds. Labels like “reef safe” are unregulated and do not guarantee environmental safety. Mineral sunscreens based on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are often promoted as safer, but certain nano‑particle forms may still harm corals. In response, tourist destinations such as Hawaii (USA) and Palau have banned the sale or use of sunscreens containing the most harmful UV filters.
Consumers are advised to examine ingredient lists, look for non‑nano mineral filters, and be aware that current “reef‑friendly” claims are not uniformly vetted.
