Coral restoration efforts advance in Costa Rica and the United States

Researchers in Costa Rica have achieved a significant milestone in reef restoration at Manzanillo on the southern Caribbean coast. In collaboration with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Raising Coral Costa Rica team successfully raised coral larvae in a temporary laboratory and returned nearly one million fertilized embryos to the reef. This method utilizes sexual reproduction to increase genetic diversity, which may help coral populations better withstand diseases and rising ocean temperatures compared to traditional fragmentation methods.

In the United States, the University of Miami’s “Rescue a Reef” program is conducting research off the coast of Florida to identify heat-resistant coral species. Following a marine heatwave that left certain species like elkhorn and staghorn coral functionally extinct in Florida’s reefs, scientists and volunteers are planting young corals on underwater structures to test their resilience to thermal stress. These efforts aim to combat the impacts of climate change and protect the ecosystems that serve as vital coastal breakwaters.
