Corato Mayor requests olive oil inspections to combat unfair competition

The Mayor of Corato, Corrado Nicola De Benedittis, has formally requested the Director General of ASL Bari, Luigi Fruscio, to launch an extraordinary inspection campaign regarding extra virgin olive oil sold within the municipality.

The request follows concerns from local olive oil producers regarding unfair competition. Operators fear that products originating from abroad are being marketed as 100% Italian, particularly when sold at low prices in large distribution centers, neighborhood shops, and boutiques.

Mayor De Benedittis emphasized that the olive oil sector is vital to Corato’s local economy and agricultural identity. The requested inspections aim to verify product labeling, check for residues, and confirm the actual origin of the oil to ensure market transparency, consumer protection, and food safety. The Mayor has asked that the results of these checks be shared with both the Municipality and the Prefecture.
