Corca Dhuibhne reports no large whale sightings this year

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) has reported that no large whale sightings have been recorded off the coast of Corca Dhuibhne so far this year. While small sightings have occurred near the Blasket Islands, the group notes a significant shift in marine mammal patterns.

According to IWDG Outreach Officer Cian Ó Nialáin, large whales that were previously common in West Cork have been moving further north, with sightings now occurring as far as Sligo and Donegal. Ó Nialáin suggested that while overfishing in the area may be a contributing factor to the disappearance of large whales from West Cork, other environmental causes may also be responsible for this migratory shift.
