Cordae faces $15M lawsuit over 2018 recording contract

Rapper Cordae and three record labels—EMPIRE, Apeshit, and Mass Appeal—are facing a federal lawsuit in New York filed by MMMG Inc. The company alleges that an exclusive recording agreement dating back to April 2018 remains in force, granting MMMG control over Cordae’s new music.

MMMG is seeking at least $15 million from Cordae for breach of contract and $5 million from the labels for allegedly inducing that breach. The lawsuit also seeks damages regarding the single ‘A Good Day’ and requests an injunction to halt the release of the upcoming collaborative album, ‘Heavy Is The Crown’, scheduled for October 23.

The dispute involves disagreements over distribution rights following the termination of a deal with Atlantic Records. MMMG claims it secured a replacement agreement with Stem that kept the original contract alive, a claim Cordae’s legal team has reportedly disputed. Additionally, MMMG alleges that Cordae has withheld contractual revenue from merchandise, touring, and other commercial activities.
