Cordillera Blanca glaciers face rapid retreat due to climate change
Artist Lucho Angulo has highlighted the rapid deterioration of the Cordillera Blanca glaciers in Peru due to climate change. Upon returning to Huaraz after several decades, Angulo observed significant environmental shifts, including rising temperatures, retreating glaciers, and the appearance of insects in high-altitude areas where they were previously uncommon.
Angulo warns that the loss of these glaciers poses a direct threat to water resources and the populations that depend on the Andes. He advocates for moving beyond mere diagnosis toward concrete protective measures, such as constructing canals, terraces, and small reservoirs to manage meltwater. Additionally, he proposes massive reforestation of the Cordillera Negra with species designed to retain moisture and improve the ecosystem.
