Cordoba artisan to gift handmade poncho to Pope Leo XIV
Erick, an artisan from the Unión indigenous community in Pachango, has spent eight months weaving a poncho to present to Pope Leo XIV. The gift is intended for the Pope’s upcoming visit to Argentina in November.
The artisan aims to use the piece to reclaim the traditions and ancestral techniques of indigenous peoples. The poncho, which is nearly complete, is crafted from llama fiber and cotton rather than sheep's wool to enhance quality and support local textile industries.
Erick plans to deliver the garment during the Pope’s visit to the province of Córdoba on November 10. In local textile traditions, the length of the poncho's fringes carries symbolic meaning, representing hierarchy and the distance from daily labor.
