Cordoba Martyrs Saint Nathalie and Companions Honored on July 27

The Catholic Church marks July 27 as the feast day of Saint Nathalie and her companions, recalling their martyrdom in 9th‑century Cordoba. Devotional reflections link the Kingdom of Heaven to the mustard seed and leaven, urging the faithful to let Christ’s rule grow in their hearts.

Historically, Cordoba was the capital of a powerful Muslim emirate in al‑Andalus where Christians lived as dhimmis under strict conditions. Nathalie, her husband Saint Aurèle, and a group of believers secretly supported clergy, including the Palestinian monk George. In 852 they were denounced, imprisoned, and after a trial refused to renounce Christianity, leading to their execution. Their story was recorded by Saint Euloge of Cordoba, who later became a martyr himself, preserving their witness for future generations.
