Core lager maintains strong market position in UK

A new study by Molson Coors, titled ‘The Pour Report’, indicates that core or standard-tier lager maintains a significant presence in the UK beer market despite the rise of premium and craft alternatives.

In the on-trade sector, core lager accounts for 35% of total beer volume sales. Research shows that 41% of lager drinkers frequently choose standard-tier options over premium varieties. Key drivers for this preference include value for money, with 66% of core lager consumers citing it as the best value, and familiarity, as 52% of drinkers are more likely to visit a venue that stocks recognizable brands.

In the off-trade sector, core lager represents 17.9% of beer sales. The report suggests these products provide a ‘safety net effect’ for retailers, where the availability of familiar brands encourages consumers to experiment with other products. When a primary choice is unavailable, 27% of shoppers opt for a core lager, compared to 24% for premium lager and 14% for craft ale.

While cost of living and financial hardship are cited as factors for changing consumption habits, price (42%) and taste (40%) remain the primary considerations for consumers choosing core lager.
