Core Lightning software targeted by attackers in urgent security warning

Developers of Core Lightning, an open-source software used to run nodes on the Bitcoin Lightning Network, have issued an urgent warning regarding active attacks targeting unpatched systems. Attackers are reportedly probing nodes running version 26.06.7 or earlier.

Users are strongly advised to upgrade to version 26.06.8 immediately to secure their funds. While the specific vulnerabilities being exploited have not been disclosed to prevent attackers from reconstructing the bugs, the update is intended to address multiple security flaws. The attack targets the Core Lightning software rather than the Bitcoin blockchain itself. It remains unclear how many nodes have been affected or if any funds have been lost.

This incident follows other recent disruptions in the cryptocurrency sector, including a breach of MetaMask's infrastructure that briefly took staking validators offline. In both cases, the platforms reported that their base layers and customer funds remained unaffected.
