Core Power signs US deal for nuclear-powered merchant ship fleet
The UK-based startup Core Power has signed a seven-year agreement with the US Maritime Administration to develop a fleet of nuclear-powered, emission-free merchant ships. The initiative aims to challenge China's dominance in the global shipping sector by introducing vessels capable of traveling at 30 knots, roughly twice the speed of standard freighters.
Core Power CEO Mikal Bøe stated that the project is necessary to maintain Western maritime power and economic security. The company plans to operate a billion-dollar nuclear shipyard in the United States, with construction slated to begin in 2028 and the first ships expected to be delivered by 2033. The plan is supported by the Trump administration as a means to revitalize American shipbuilding and create a market for the nuclear industry.
