Coren-BA launches campaign against violence in healthcare
The Regional Nursing Council of Bahia (Coren-BA) has launched the ‘Campaign to Combat Violence in Health’ to address the rising number of aggressions against nurses, technicians, and assistants during their professional duties. The initiative aims to raise social awareness and prevent healthcare workers from becoming targets of frustration regarding structural issues in health services.
Data from Coren-BA indicates a significant increase in reported incidents. Between 2024 and August 2026, the council recorded 565 processes in the state. The 233 cases reported so far in 2026 represent a 43% increase compared to the total recorded in the previous year. Reported incidents include physical aggression, threats, verbal violence, moral harassment, racial discrimination, and abuse of authority.
Coren-BA President Davi Apóstolo noted that the campaign was prompted by a surge in reports, including a recent incident at Hospital Professor Eládio Lassére in Salvador, where three nurses were allegedly assaulted by a companion. Nationally, data from the Federal Nursing Council (Cofen) suggests that over 28% of nursing professionals in Brazil have experienced some form of workplace violence in recent years.
