CoreWeave faces market turmoil amid rising debt and AI credit fears

CoreWeave, an AI cloud infrastructure provider, is facing intense market scrutiny as its stock price plunged over 22 percent in a single week. The sell-off is driven by growing investor anxiety regarding the company's massive debt load, estimated at approximately $50 billion, and the rising costs of financing its rapid expansion into data centers.

Credit markets are signaling heightened risk. CoreWeave's five-year credit default swap (CDS) spreads surged past 1,100 basis points, and yields on its 2031 bonds spiked above 16 percent, with some debt trading at distressed levels below 80 cents on the dollar. This volatility has triggered broader concerns across the AI sector, affecting companies like Oracle and Nebius Group.

Analysts and market observers, including Elon Musk, have noted the extreme bond yields, which some suggest may indicate a private credit bubble. While Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has expressed optimism regarding CoreWeave's improving financial health, Gartner predicts that more than 80 percent of neocloud providers may fail to remain independent companies by 2030.
