Corey Heim criticizes NASCAR rules disqualifying him from Rookie of the Year

NASCAR driver Corey Heim has criticized recent rule changes that render him ineligible for the Cup Series Rookie of the Year award. Under updated regulations, drivers are permitted a maximum of 12 starts prior to their official rookie season. Having already completed 15 Cup Series starts since his 2024 debut, Heim will be disqualified from rookie contention when he begins his full-time campaign with 23XI Racing in 2027.

Heim also missed eligibility for the 2026 season because he did not submit a formal application for candidacy, a requirement mandated by NASCAR. Speaking at Richmond Raceway, Heim expressed concern that the new stipulations diminish the prestige of the honor, stating, “If you want that award to mean something... make it worth something, and it’s losing its value.”

23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin expressed surprise regarding the ruling, noting that the team was not informed of the specific plan or how the start limit would affect Heim’s eligibility. Despite the setback, Heim has secured two Cup Series victories in his 15 starts, including wins at Naval Base Coronado and Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
