Corey Jensen retires from NRL after pulmonary embolism

Brisbane Broncos prop Corey Jensen, 32, announced his retirement from the National Rugby League after doctors diagnosed pulmonary embolisms in both lungs following a Round 7 match against the Wests Tigers. The condition required him to remain on lifelong blood‑thinning medication, making continued participation in contact sport unsafe. Jensen, who debuted with the North Queensland Cowboys in 2017 before joining the Broncos in 2022, was a key member of the club’s 2025 premiership‑winning forward pack. Over his career he amassed more than 150 first‑grade appearances across both clubs. In a club statement, medical specialists confirmed that while there is no underlying autoimmune issue, the risk of further clots mandates retirement. Jensen said his health must come first and expressed gratitude to his former teams and family. He holds a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science from James Cook University and plans to pursue a career in sports science.
