Corey Murphey breaks two Lake Tahoe swimming records
Corey Murphey has become only the fourth person to complete a double-crossing of Lake Tahoe, breaking two marathon swimming records in the process. The 42.6-mile swim involved two 21.3-mile legs between Incline Village and Camp Richardson.
Murphey set a new record for the north-to-south directional length, reaching the turnaround point in 10 hours—beating the previous 2012 record by 50 minutes. She completed the full double-length swim in 20 hours and 54 minutes, surpassing the previous record held by Sarah Thomas by over 90 minutes.
The swim began on July 17th at approximately 8:00pm, requiring Murphey to navigate through the night. Under competition rules, she was permitted no more than 10 minutes out of the water during her turnaround. Murphey was supported by a crew that included her mother, Jill.
