Corfu commemorates Saint Spyridon with major religious procession

Thousands of faithful gathered in Corfu to participate in a major religious procession and commemorative services honoring Saint Spyridon. The events, held on August 11, 2026, mark the anniversary of the miracle of 1716, when the island's patron saint is credited with saving Corfu from an Ottoman siege.

The procession included the Holy Relic of Saint Spyridon and was attended by numerous high-ranking clergy, including the Metropolitans of Corfu, Chalcis, Gordos, and Cotylae. Government officials, including Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Stefanos Gikas, along with local leaders and military representatives, were also present.

During the services, Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu emphasized the spiritual importance of the tradition, calling for “spiritual resistance” against threats to faith, the Church, and traditional values. Bishop Isidoros of Andidōn also spoke, noting that the Church finds strength through faith and humility rather than worldly power.
