Corfu Philharmonic Society band marks 185 years
On August 23, 2026, the band of the Old Philharmonic Society of Corfu marks 185 years since its first public appearance. While the Philharmonic Society of Corfu was officially founded on September 12, 1840, the systematic organization of its band began in April 1841.
The band's debut occurred on August 23, 1841, under the direction of Antonis Liberalis. The performance took place during the annual procession of Saint Spyridon, playing from the society's former building and the women's gallery of the holy temple. This event is considered the birth of the unique Corfiot band phenomenon, which has since inspired the creation of numerous musical ensembles on the island, providing significant artistic and social services over nearly two centuries.
