Corfu tourism growth fails to boost local market spending
Despite high tourist arrivals and crowded beaches in Corfu, local business professionals are reporting a disconnect between visitor numbers and local economic benefits. While planes and roads are full, the increased influx of tourists is not translating into proportional consumption within the local market.
Several factors contribute to this trend. Visitors are increasingly budget-conscious due to rising living costs in their home countries and high expenses for flights and accommodation. Additionally, the growth of rental accommodations equipped with kitchens has led more tourists to shop at supermarkets and cook for themselves rather than dining out at local restaurants.
This shift creates a paradox where increased arrivals do not necessarily lead to increased prosperity for the local economy, which relies on spending in cafes, shops, excursions, and various service sectors.
