Corfu tourism: Investigation reveals exploitation of visitors

An undercover investigation by the Daily Mail has revealed widespread exploitation of tourists in Corfu, Greece. The report highlights a pattern of predatory practices by various bars and restaurants, particularly targeting British visitors.

Key findings from the investigation include illegible handwritten receipts, discrepancies between menu prices and final bills, and charges for items presented as complimentary, such as bread and tzatziki. Tourists reported excessive pricing for basic goods, including 8-euro soft drinks, 14-euro cocktails, and 12.50-euro ice cream servings. Additionally, some businesses reportedly pressured customers to pay in cash.

The exploitation reportedly begins upon arrival, with taxi drivers allegedly failing to use meters, leading to inflated fares for short trips. One local waitress admitted to the reporter that tourists are frequently targeted, stating, "Everyone. Honestly, everyone. In bars, in clubs, in shops, they are stealing from them."

These practices have led to significant dissatisfaction, with many travelers expressing that they do not intend to return to the island, potentially damaging Corfu's long-term reputation as a hospitality destination.
