Corigliano-Rossano and San Paolo to initiate twinning project

An institutional delegation from Corigliano-Rossano, led by Mayor Flavio Stasi and Archbishop Aloise, is scheduled to travel to San Paolo, Brazil, on August 27 to initiate a formal twinning project between the two cities.

The partnership is rooted in the historical migration of Calabrians to Brazil during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Specifically, the Bixiga neighborhood in San Paolo became a hub for migrants from Corigliano, who established the cult of Madonna Achiropita. This devotion led to the founding of the Nossa Senhora Achiropita Parish in 1926, and the annual festival has since become a major celebration in Brazil.

During the visit, officials intend to sign a memorandum to approve the twinning, a process that currently requires parliamentary legislation within the San Paolo Municipal Council. The cooperation aims to foster social, cultural, historical, and economic ties. As an immediate follow-up, a cultural exchange program will take place in September, when six young people from San Paolo will visit Corigliano-Rossano.
