Corinthians ends Memphis Depay contract negotiations

Corinthians has officially announced that it will not renew the contract of Dutch striker Memphis Depay, ending negotiations that had been ongoing for several weeks. Club president Osmar Stabile stated the decision was made “unique and exclusively in consideration of the financial health of our institution,” citing the need for fiscal responsibility and long-term sustainability.

Despite reaching a preliminary agreement on terms, the club's board opted to halt the process to avoid the risks associated with a high-value, long-term commitment. The proposed new contract would have cost the club upwards of R$ 147 million when including salaries, image rights, and existing debts. Reports suggest that internal political pressures and concerns regarding the club's cash flow influenced the final decision.

Depay leaves the club after 79 appearances and 20 goals, having helped secure three titles: the Campeonato Paulista, the Copa do Brasil, and the Supercopa Rei. However, the departure carries significant legal and financial implications. The club faces a potential debt of approximately R$ 42 million to the player, which could rise to R$ 80 million with interest and taxes. This outstanding balance may lead Depay to seek recourse through FIFA, potentially resulting in a new transfer ban for Corinthians.
