Corinthians midfielder Ederson named to Brazil World Cup squad amid Memphis Depay renewal talks

Ederson, the former Corinthians midfielder who played 25 matches and scored three goals for the club between 2020 and 2021, has been called up by Italy's Carlo Ancelotti to replace Wesley in Brazil's World Cup squad. After a modest transfer to Italy's Salernitana for €6.5 million, the player was later signed by Manchester United for roughly R$260 million.

Former Corinthians defender Leandro Castan, a 2012 Libertadores champion, said the club should keep Dutch striker Memphis Depay, whose contract ends on 31 July. Despite a severe financial strain with a debt of about R$2.7 billion, the club aims to extend Depay until 2028, cut his monthly cost from R$3.7 million to R$2.5 million, and spread roughly R$43 million of outstanding payments over the next years, while seeking new sponsorship support.
