Burkina Faso financial sector sees Coris Bank milestone and Diaspora Bond success

Burkina Faso is experiencing significant shifts in its financial landscape, marked by both major capital market milestones and rising banking risks. Coris Bank International Burkina Faso has reached a historic milestone, with its market capitalization on the Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières (BRVM) surpassing 1,000 billion FCFA, reaching 1,040 billion FCFA as of early September 2026. This follows a massive stock surge of over 200% since the start of 2026.

Simultaneously, the nation has successfully integrated its Diaspora Bonds into the BRVM. The bond operation, which aimed to raise 125 billion FCFA, exceeded expectations by mobilizing 151.5 billion FCFA from the Burkinabè diaspora. These bonds, featuring interest rates between 6.75% and 6.85%, are now tradable on the secondary market and are intended to fund critical infrastructure, energy, and industrial projects.

However, the banking sector faces challenges. Coris Bank International Burkina Faso reported a 48.1% year-on-year increase in its cost of risk, reaching 8.286 billion FCFA by mid-2026. This rise reflects increased provisions to cover potential loan defaults amidst a complex economic and security environment.
