Corn disease spreads in Poland as growers adjust fertilizer strategies
A fungal disease known as glume (pustular) blight, caused by *Sphacelotheca reiliana*, is becoming an increasing problem for corn fields in north‑western Germany and Poland. First Polish cases were recorded in 1961, with sporadic reports thereafter; the disease re‑appeared more frequently in 2023 after a dry, warm spring. Spores reside in the upper soil layer, can survive up to three years, and spread through wind, contaminated equipment, manure and biogas waste. Experts advise crop‑rotation and avoiding continuous corn cultivation to limit infection.
Corn cultivation in Poland also demands careful nutrient management. Farmers need ample nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, plus secondary nutrients such as magnesium, sulfur and micronutrients like zinc and boron. Soil‑analysis‑based fertiliser programmes—multi‑nutrient blends before sowing and nitrogen applications at key growth stages—are recommended to maximise yields while preventing excess use. Modern seeders can place starter fertiliser directly beside the seed, and organic amendments such as well‑composted manure may be used where appropriate.
